A reconstructed timeline is an evidence-review tool. It is not automatically an official immigration record, police record, proof of PCC coverage or proof of the dates a receiving authority will accept.
Public National Immigration Administration materials do not clearly establish universal access to official historical entry-exit records for ordinary former foreign residents. Current eligibility and available historical coverage should be verified with 12367 or the relevant exit-entry authority rather than assumed.
Why Entry and Exit Dates May Matter in a China PCC Review
A timeline connects the period under review with a city, passport and surviving records. It can expose travel gaps, passport changes or dates that conflict with institutional files.
The national Ministry of Public Security criminal-record inquiry rules provide a general foreign-resident route and permit local implementation. They do not prescribe one nationwide date-reconstruction method or guarantee full requested coverage.
Separate the Different Date Types
Actual Entry and Exit Dates
These concern border crossings. One recorded date does not establish the other end of a stay.
Visa Validity Dates
A visa may show permission to seek entry, not actual arrival, presence or departure.
Residence-Permit Dates
A residence permit shows authorized status. Official NIA guidance does not make its validity proof of uninterrupted presence.
Study or Employment Dates
Study or work dates support chronology but can differ from travel dates.
Accommodation Dates
Accommodation dates are not border-crossing dates and may not reflect absences.
Build a Working China Residence Timeline
Use one row per stay. Record each source, preserve month-only or year-only precision, and mark conflicts rather than closing gaps. Use “Confirmed” only when a reliable record directly confirms that date.
| Period | Earliest Supported Date | Latest Supported Date | City | Source Record | What the Record Shows | Confidence | Conflict / Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stay 1 | Date or month/year | Date or month/year | Known city | Passport, ticket or permit | Describe only its real function | Confirmed / Strongly Supported / Approximate / Uncertain / Needs Verification | Missing day, conflicting record or unexplained gap |
A compact conflict log can compare two sources. Never turn an estimate into an exact day.
Which Records May Help Confirm the Dates?
The classifications below describe possible evidentiary functions. They are not universal PCC requirements, and no record is automatically sufficient by itself.
| Record | Classification | What It May Establish | What It Does Not Establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current passport | Potential identity evidence | Current identity | Earlier-passport travel |
| Old passport | Potential identity / direct travel-date evidence | Identity, visas, surviving stamps | Complete travel history |
| Chinese entry stamp | Potential direct travel-date evidence | Recorded admission | Departure or later residence |
| Chinese exit stamp | Potential direct travel-date evidence | Recorded departure | Preceding entry or full stay |
| China visa | Potential immigration-status evidence | Basis to seek entry | Actual travel or presence |
| Residence permit | Potential immigration-status evidence | Authorized status | Continuous presence or address |
| Foreigner’s Work Permit | Potential employment-period evidence | Work authorization | Travel or accommodation |
| School enrollment dates | Potential study-period evidence | Enrollment period | Attendance or residence |
| Graduation dates | Potential supporting chronology evidence | Completion date | Course-period residence |
| Employment contract dates | Potential employment-period evidence | Contract period | Physical presence |
| Employer records | Potential supporting chronology evidence | Employer/work dates | Border or police records |
| Airline itinerary | Potential supporting chronology evidence | Planned journey | Completed travel |
| E-ticket receipt | Potential supporting chronology evidence | Ticketed route | Boarding or border clearance |
| Boarding pass | Potential travel chronology evidence | Boarding-related date | Flight completion or admission |
| Hotel records | Potential accommodation evidence | Booking/recorded stay | Full residence or border dates |
| Lease | Potential accommodation evidence | Access to an address | Full-term occupation |
| Temporary accommodation registration | Potential accommodation evidence | Registered place/time | Full stay or PCC coverage |
| Immigration appointment/email | Potential supporting chronology evidence | Administrative interaction | Permit issuance or presence |
| Tax records | Potential supporting chronology evidence only | Employment chronology | Travel or residence |
| Social-insurance records | Potential supporting chronology evidence only | Contribution periods | Travel, address or eligibility |
| University records | Potential supporting chronology evidence | Study dates | Exact travel or presence |
| Employer accommodation records | Potential accommodation evidence | Housing history | Police registration |
| Personal calendar/email archives | Potential supporting chronology evidence only | Date leads | Official proof alone |
Official NIA guidance distinguishes hotel reporting from registration at other accommodation. Review temporary residence registration for China PCC applications before treating a lease, booking or personal record as police registration.

What If Passport Stamps Are Missing or Illegible?
Faded stamps, missing pages, automated processing, passport replacement or loss can leave an incomplete visible history. Do not assume every crossing produced the same type of mark or that the current passport contains every China stay. Record what is legible, identify the passport used, and compare it with travel, permit and institutional records without treating those sources as automatic substitutes or official border records. Note any missing page or unexplained sequence rather than filling it from memory. For the wider identity and document problem, use the guide to China PCC cases involving an old or expired passport.
Can a Former Foreigner Obtain an Official China Entry-Exit Record?
A historical NIA foreigner FAQ did not establish foreign-national access through its border-station route. The current NIA service window displays a query service, but the interface does not prove foreigner account eligibility, online or in-person access, representative or overseas access, or coverage across historical passports, ports and years.
Ask NIA 12367 or the relevant exit-entry authority to confirm the applicant category, acceptable identity document, access method and available period. A successful inquiry in one case should not be treated as a universal procedure, and official retrieval must not be assumed.
Published procedures should always be read for the applicant category they expressly cover.
Multiple Passports and Separate Stays
Match Each Passport to Its Relevant Records
List passports chronologically and match each visa, permit or registration to its passport. Preserve gaps. Detailed identity continuity belongs in name and passport record mismatches.
Keep Non-Consecutive Stays Separate
Use one row per stay and preserve departure gaps. Do not merge visits because one permit remained valid. Threshold analysis belongs in how continuous and cumulative residence may be assessed.
What If You Lived in More Than One Chinese City?
First establish the best-supported dates for each stay; then assess city-specific PCC coverage. Record a move, return or overlapping institutional record without assuming that one authority covers another location or that separate certificates are always required. Keep the timeline focused on dates rather than selecting an issuing office. The detailed location and period analysis remains in China PCC coverage for multiple cities and residence periods.
How to Record Approximate or Conflicting Dates
If the day is unknown, keep month/year; if only the year is supported, keep that precision. When sources disagree, list both and mark the period Uncertain or Needs Verification.
Permit, school or work periods may include absences. Separate supported from inferred dates and verify formal submission requirements before presenting anything as exact.
What a Working Timeline Can—and Cannot—Do
A timeline can connect cities, periods, passports and gaps. It cannot guarantee official record retrieval, PCC coverage, issuance or acceptance.
If a period cannot be supported or certified, use what to check if a China Police Certificate cannot cover the requested period. Remediation remains outside this article.
Residence Timeline Review Checklist
- Approximate China periods, known entry/exit dates and uncertainty level.
- City or cities, purpose of stay and passports used.
- Visas, residence permits and surviving travel records.
- School, employer and accommodation dates.
- Conflicting sources, separate stays and missing intervals.
- Destination, receiving authority, exact request wording and deadline.
This is a review checklist, not an official required-document list.
Common Mistakes
- Using visa or permit validity as actual residence dates.
- Merging separate stays or inventing exact days.
- Assuming one passport contains the full history.
- Treating an itinerary as proof of completed travel or a lease as continuous residence.
- Assuming official record access is guaranteed.
- Ignoring conflicts or presenting a working timeline as official evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need exact China entry and exit dates before requesting a PCC?
Preliminary review may use supported approximate dates, but formal requirements must be checked.
Does a China visa prove how long I stayed?
No. It does not prove actual arrival, departure or presence.
Does a residence permit prove continuous physical presence?
No. Its validity can include travel outside China.
What if my old passport is lost or some stamps are missing?
Record the gap and compare surviving sources without assuming they are accepted substitutes.
What if I used more than one passport?
List them chronologically and connect each record to the passport shown.
How should I record several separate China stays?
Use one row per stay and preserve every period outside China.
Can a former foreign resident obtain an official China entry-exit record?
Universal eligibility is unclear. Confirm access and coverage with NIA 12367 or the relevant authority.
What if I only know approximate dates or my records conflict?
Preserve the supported precision and mark conflicts for verification.
