Apostille · Validity

How Long Is a China Apostille Valid?

Separate the age of the Apostille from the freshness of the underlying document and the overseas recipient’s acceptance rules.

Direct Answer: A China Apostille does not have a fixed six-month, one-year or other age-based expiry period under the Apostille Convention. HCCH guidance says a valid Apostille should not be rejected solely because of its age, provided it remains identifiable and attached or logically associated with the underlying public document. However, this does not mean the Apostilled document will be accepted indefinitely. The underlying document, notarial certificate and overseas recipient may have separate validity or freshness requirements.

Sources reviewed: 31 August 2026. China MFA procedures, e-Apostille scope and overseas recipient requirements can change, so confirm current instructions before submission.

Apostille age ≠ underlying-document freshness ≠ recipient acceptance. Before reusing an older package, identify which question the receiving organization is asking.

Does a China Apostille Expire?

The HCCH Apostille Convention does not prescribe a fixed validity period for an Apostille. The HCCH Apostille Handbook, Second Edition explains that an Apostille validly issued under the Convention should not be rejected solely because of its age.

That conclusion is narrower than saying “Apostilles never expire.” The certificate must remain identifiable and properly attached or logically associated with the public document. Damage, detachment, alteration, fraud, revocation, mismatch and verification problems are separate from age.

China MFA’s destination-requirement guidance also emphasizes checking the destination, purpose and receiving requirements. For the broader route, see China Apostille requirements and process.

The Three Dates You Should Check

  1. Underlying document or record date. When the source record was issued or the period it covers—often key for time-sensitive evidence.
  2. Notarial certificate or certified-copy date. When the public or certified form entering the Apostille route was created.
  3. Apostille issue date. When the competent authority authenticated that public document’s formal origin.

Each date answers a different question. The Apostille issue date does not refresh the information in the underlying record. If a police certificate was already several months old when Apostilled, the later Apostille date does not make the criminal-record information newly issued.

Do China Apostilles Expire After Six Months or One Year?

No universal six-month rule or one-year rule was found in the Convention framework. Those periods often come from a requirement applying to the underlying document or a particular filing—not from expiry of the Apostille itself.

For example, a recipient may require a police certificate issued within six months, a recent civil-registry extract, a current company record or a document submitted within an application deadline. If the recipient says, “We need a police certificate issued within the last six months,” that does not mean the Apostille expired after six months. It means the recipient requires a newer police certificate.

China MFA’s explanation of Apostille describes authentication of formal origin; it does not turn a recipient’s freshness window into a universal validity period.

How Document Type Changes the Freshness Question

Police Certificates

Police certificate information is time-sensitive because it concerns a person’s record for a stated date or period. A destination authority may require recent issuance. For example, IRCC police-certificate guidance may require a certificate for a current country of residence to have been issued no more than six months before submission.

That is an IRCC application rule, not a China Apostille validity rule and not a universal police-certificate rule. A newer PCC may need to be obtained and prepared through the applicable authentication route. Obtaining a later Apostille for an older document does not make the information in that document more current.

Birth and Civil Records

A birth is a historical event, but the recipient may require a recent extract, new certified copy, particular notarial form, or further identity or parentage evidence.

If a new certified copy or notarial certificate is issued, the Apostille attached to the old version does not transfer to the new document. The new public or certified form may require its own Apostille.

Academic Documents

A degree generally records a historical award. A recipient may nevertheless require a newer transcript, academic verification, CHSI or CSSD evidence where applicable, direct or sealed delivery, credential evaluation or a new certified copy.

Those are academic or recipient requirements. An Apostille does not establish academic equivalence or compel WES, a university or another organization to accept the qualification.

Company Records and Powers of Attorney

Commercial facts and legal authority can change. Registry information, directors, authorized representatives, board resolutions and company status may no longer be current. A Power of Attorney may contain its own expiry date, be revoked or be superseded.

An Apostille authenticates formal origin at the relevant time; it does not freeze corporate facts or make an authorization continue indefinitely.

When Might You Need a New Apostille?

A new Apostille may be appropriate when the recipient requires a new underlying document, a new certified copy is created, the document is corrected or reissued, or the original package is lost or detached.

The correct response is not automatically “get another Apostille.” In many cases, the sequence is:

Possible sequence: New underlying document → new certified or notarial form where required → new Apostille.

If the document was revoked, cancelled, replaced or corrected, confirm which new evidence the recipient wants before repeating any authentication step.

If you instead hold an older Chinese notarial certificate that has never been Apostilled, review whether an older notarial certificate can receive its first Apostille. That is a different pre-application question.

What If the Apostille Is Damaged, Detached or Altered?

An old Apostille is not the same as a damaged, detached, altered, mismatched or fraudulent Apostille. HCCH guidance treats proper attachment or logical association with the underlying public document as important. Detachment can break that association and may prevent the package from being accepted.

Do not restaple, rearrange or alter the package in an attempt to repair it. Ask the competent authority or receiving organization what evidence or replacement route is appropriate. If an overseas authority has already rejected the package, see what to check if an Apostilled document is not accepted overseas.

e-Apostilles and Online Verification

China has introduced e-Apostilles for certain electronic documents through an evolving scope. Check the current China MFA e-Apostille notice for the applicable category.

Under HCCH guidance, a valid e-Apostille does not acquire an age-based expiry merely because the signing digital certificate later expires, provided that certificate was valid when the e-Apostille was issued. Digital integrity and logical association with the electronic public document remain essential.

China provides an official Apostille verification channel. A failed online lookup does not by itself prove that the Apostille expired. It should be investigated as a verification issue, and no permanent online retention period should be assumed. What Does the Apostille Actually Prove?

An Apostille authenticates the formal origin of a qualifying public document—principally the signature, the capacity in which the signer acted and, where applicable, the identity of the seal or stamp.

It does not automatically certify the truth of every underlying fact, current criminal status, current civil or company status, academic equivalence, continuing Power of Attorney authority or overseas acceptance.

Common Mistakes

  • “My Apostille is six months old, so it expired.” A six-month rule may concern the underlying document or application, not the Apostille.
  • “A new Apostille will make my old PCC current again.” A later Apostille does not update the police information.
  • “My degree is Apostilled, so WES or a university must accept it.” Academic recognition and delivery rules remain separate.
  • “My Power of Attorney is Apostilled, so the authority can never expire.” The authority may expire, be revoked or be superseded.
  • “The verification website did not find it, so it expired.” Failed lookup is a verification issue to investigate, not proof of age-based expiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a China Apostille valid?

The Convention does not impose a fixed age-based expiry period. The Apostille must remain identifiable and associated with its public document, while document freshness and recipient acceptance remain separate.

Does a China Apostille expire after six months?

No universal six-month Apostille rule exists. A six-month requirement may instead apply to the underlying record or a particular application.

Does a China Apostille expire after one year?

No universal one-year Apostille rule exists. Check the document type and receiving organization’s current instructions.

Can an overseas authority reject an older Apostilled document?

Yes. It may require a newer underlying document, different certified form, translation or other evidence even though age alone did not invalidate the Apostille.

What happens if the underlying document has expired?

Depending on the document and recipient, a current underlying record, new certified or notarial form, and a new Apostille may be required.

Do I need a new Apostille for a newly issued certified copy?

Usually the old Apostille cannot transfer to a new certified copy. Confirm whether the new public or certified form requires its own Apostille.

Does a China police certificate Apostille have a six-month validity period?

No universal China PCC Apostille period applies. A destination or application may require a recently issued police certificate.

Does an Apostille on a birth certificate expire?

Age alone does not create a fixed Convention expiry, but a recipient may require a recent extract, new certified copy or particular document form.

Can I reuse the same Apostilled document for another application?

Possibly, if the package remains intact and the new recipient accepts its document type, age, form and intended use. Acceptance is not guaranteed.

Does failed online verification mean the Apostille has expired?

No. A failed lookup should be investigated as a verification problem; it does not establish age-based expiry.

Request a China Apostille Date and Document Review

Global Attest can review the Apostille issue date, underlying-document date, notarial or certified-document date, document condition and attachment, destination, intended use, and recipient freshness instructions. The review can help identify whether a newer document may be needed and whether China-side notarization or Apostille coordination may be appropriate.

Final document suitability, Apostille verification and issuance, and overseas acceptance remain subject to the competent authorities and receiving organization.
